The committee report warned that "the carelessness, slovenly and unproductive husbandry visible in some parts of our state, undoubtedly result mainly from the habit of depending on slave labor. The unveiling ceremony in Platt Fields in 1919 was an unashamed celebration of Manchester’s liberal values, emphasising the noble sacrifices made by workers during the cotton famine, a sacrifice which allowed Lincoln to regard Britain as an ally in the Union cause. In addition to war legislation, Congress established the first national currency in the Legal Tender Act. Over time many of these latent conflicts became manifest, and dominant group activists who played an important role in the formative phases of the movement were excluded or forced to assume greatly reduced roles.

Harvey Fisher, her youngest son, fought in the Civil War with the 150th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, known as the “Bucktails.” Many of her letters note his involvement in the war as well as national war news circulating in Philadelphia at the time. Alfred Torbert drove out a small force of Confederate infantry at Milford Station. During the 1850s, Tubman made 19 separate trips into slave territory. Suffrage legislation was introduced in the Indiana General Assembly during the term of Governor Thomas Hendricks, but the bill was defeated.
